CHOOSING A THERAPIST

A therapist's training and experience are very important but the right personality and connection are also important at the beginning of therapy and become even more important as your interviews become more thorough and meaningful. You will be vulnerable as you begin because you are saying, "This is me...the good, the bad, and the ugly."  From the very beginning, you want to feel a connection as you explore the intimacy that makes up your life.  To do that, you want to be comfortable with whom you share your story.  Ask yourself if you feel like this is someone whom you can trust and with whom you can be real.  Not all personalities mesh and that is ok.  Trust your gut.
An initial consultation should help you to know if this could be the beginning of a meaningful professional relationship.  You will want to feel accepted and cared for by the counselor in your life.  There are many counselors and therapists in Alabama.  Being financially responsible is important.  I think, however, that some people ask about costs because they don't know what else to ask.  Some people don't always know what they are searching for so they ask "What do you charge?"  This feels like an acceptable way to get started.  It is normal.
Remember that your life situation is everything to you.  I know this because I feel the same way.  You want a therapeutic relationship that feels solid and right.  Choosing your therapeutic relationship is a huge decision with which you should feel comfortable.  You should feel like you can present your current problems and like you can ask for the information which you want.  I have compiled a list of questions that you should ask when you set out to find a therapist.  These questions may help you to get close to what you are looking for:
     1. Do you specialize in a particular kind of therapy?
     2. Can I find you online?
     3. Will you take notes about the important things that I tell you?
     4. Who will see your records?
     5. Can I reach you when I do not have an appointment?
     6. Will everything that I discuss remain private?
     7. Will all of my records remain private?
     8. How much experience do you have with problems like mine?

I want my clients to have a good experience with me from the start.  A personalized consultation will involve sessions planned around presented concerns.  Some people like to invite friends or family to further describe troubling situations.  Full and great communication throughout will always remain important.
Don't bargain shop your counseling care.  You can decide what brings value to you and what is worth your investment.  If you are considering a low-priced therapist, you may want to consider why they are priced that way.  Do they lack experience?  Is availability limited?  Look for someone who will invest as much time and wisdom as you need.
