If you are having problems in your family relationships, you are probably experiencing frequent conflict with you parents, your spouse or your children. You don't feel that your family is a constant, predictable source of support. You may be capable of living independently, but you choose not to do so. We can explore the factors that keep you feeling dependent on family You don't communicate with family members on a regular basis.
When you are in counseling for these problems, I will help you to describe the conflicts you experience and I will help you to identify your own role in these conflicts. I will increase your level of independent functioning which can involve finding and keeping a job, saving money, socializing with friends and finding your own housing.
Family therapy sessions can sometimes increase healthy communication and conflict resolution. Family therapy is only one option for resolving family issues. You may prefer a more solitary, individual setting.
We will attempt increase the number of positive family interactions by planning some family activities. We can work on talking calmly with each other. Some clients fear that once they express negative feelings, they may cause even more problems. With helpful therapeutic coaching, this does not have to be the case.
During treatment, you may feel nervous about saying things that you have felt for quite some time but have avoided because you may not have felt that you could deal with the consequences - like temporary rejection - as you begin to assert yourself. I will help you to probe your fears related to this issue and I will teach you ways of feeling more safe in expressing your feelings in a family setting.
