Divorce

If you are dealing with a divorce, you are likely to be experiencing anger, resentment, irritability and sadness. You are probably anxious over your future. You may be finding it hard to make decisions and it can be hard for you to ask for help during this time when you may be avoiding interpersonal relationships. You may have particular concerns about your new financial issues. Coping with the stress of a custody situation may add to your difficulties. Sometimes, people who are divorcing are excluded from social situations in which a single person may feel threatening to those who are still living as a couple.

During counseling you will have the opportunity to discuss the events surrounding your divorce and your related behavioral changes. You will be able to decrease some of your stress by talking about your possible feelings of guilt, depression, anger and shame.

It is possible that you may find it harder to trust others if you have been previously betrayed. You may even find it difficult to trust your therapist if you have been the victim of a breach of trust. This is not unusual and we can deal with this constructively. You may also blame yourself "because my marriage failed." You could be telling yourself that it is impossible for you to ever have a good relationship in the future. I can help you to challenge these thoughts and beliefs.
