LESSONS ABOUT END OF LIFE

Mitch Albom, an author from Detroit, wrote about his early companionship with his college professor, Morrie Schwartz. When Mitch learned that Morrie was dying of Lou Gehrig's disease, he found out where Morrie lived and visited him asking Morrie to give him final lessons about how to live life fully. The book he wrote about those final lessons is tender, somber and worthy of attention. "Tuesdays With Morrie" is the summary of those last classes that Morrie gave to Mitch. He shared his knowledge that when a person is dying, perceptions about how to live change. Morrie helped Mitch to understand how to deal with complex life problems. He asked Mitch to "Study me in my slow and patient demise. Watch what happens to me. Learn with me." Mitch did so as he met with Morrie every Tuesday during the end of his life. I want to share 5 of the many valuable lessons that Mitch learned during those final classes. Learn with me as Mitch did with Morrie.

1. Live your life as if it is your last day. Most of the time we think that we have more time to do the right thing, but we never really know that last time when we will say goodbye. "Everyone knows that they are going to die, but nobody believes it." Give your best now.
2. Give meaning to your life by loving others. Don't chase money and fame. Devote yourself to your family, your friends and your community.
3. Do the kinds of things that come from your heart without expecting something in return.
4. Recognize that, at death, only your body dies. Remember the love that you have had. Those memories are still there and you will live on in the hearts of everyone you have touched. Only your body dies - not your relationships.
5. Be compassionate and help all others. We are one big human family. Spreading empathy and concern are the only things that can truly make us happy.

When time permits, read "Tuesday With Morrie." It will truly make you richer.
