THE WISDOM OF CHICKEN LITTLE

In the early 1940s propaganda about the Nazi party presented a fear of danger to us. Many methods were used to convince people that the jeopardy may not have been as threatening to all of us as we were led to believe. Newspaper reports, magazine articles and radio broadcasts were used to attempt convincing people that the risk was not great. In addition to the above communications, removal of the terrorizing impact was also surprisingly attempted with childrens' stories which encouraged us not to overreact to small things or blow them out of proportion and not to believe everything we were told. This led to the increased use of the tale about Chicken Little and his friends.

The story begins with Chicken Little taking a walk. During the walk a bird flew over and dropped an acorn which hit Chicken Little on the head. Chicken Little didn't see anything above or below so he screamed that the sky was falling and that he had to tell the king. He ran down the road and met Henny Penny, Goosey Loosey and Turkey Lurkey. They all went down the road together to tell the king that the sky was falling. Henny Penny, Goosey Loosely and Turkey Lurkey went first. Chicken Little remembered that it was his turn to take responsibility for emptying the garbage so he went home and never did get to see the king.

The Chicken Little story is cautionary. You see, the chicken jumped to conclusions and, therefore, believed the world was coming to an end. He caused mass hysteria and ran around telling all of his friends. They believed they had to band together to cope with their fears. How much better it would have been if they went to Dr. Martin Luther King who believed that "normal fear protects us. Abnormal fear paralyses us. Normal fear motivates us to improve our individual and collective welfare. Abnormal fear constantly poisons and distorts our lives. Our problem is not to be rid of fear, but, rather, to harness and master it." Chicken Little and his friends went to the wrong king.

We need to focus more on the beautiful things in our lives and the loves that keep us whole. These are more powerful than fears. If you will not believe this, you might as well just lay down and let the world grind you into a grave.
