TRAUMA AFFECTS YOUR BODY

I have studied the work of BessetvanderKalk M.D. who has written comprehensibly about the relationship of emotional and physical trauma. His work has encouraged me to write this blog.
When you have had a deeply distressing experience, you are likely to find it difficult to manage and muddle through. Coping problems can last for days, months or even years during which you can become irritable, tense and extremely sad. These reactions can lead to occupational problems, financial difficulties, poor sleep, substance abuse and suicidal thoughts.
Your trauma may have involved divorce in your family, having a background of abuse, current exploitation, either as a victim or as a perpetrator, having been in an accident or living with daily information about COVID 19. These kinds of emotional shocks can leave an scars on your body as well as on your feelings.
Your body has to learn that the difficulty will pass and that it will no longer exist as intensely. A list of coping techniques can help you regain your strength and get back to normal. You will need to become, and remain, calm and feel personally closer to people around you. Do remain honest with yourself about many ways you may have been self medicating with alcohol, illegal drugs or risky behaviors.
Some of the things I have taught my clients have been yoga to release muscle tension and talk therapy to help people acknowledge what has happened to them and having their feelings about it recognized. Being understood often works better than medication, It can feel comfortable to release your deepest emotions.
Another way to experience your feelings is to write about them. How helpful it is to mark down and compose without worry about what others think of you or how they may judge you. Find a therapist who understands how to use the above techniques. Make sure that you feel safe and comfortable with your therapist so that you can express your fears and anxieties.
Read the book The Body Keeps The Score by Dr. BesselvanKalt for more information about the healing of anguish. It was written at the Trauma Research Foundation. My reading this material has helped me to remain more tranquil and relaxed.
