YES WE CAN

During this alarming and formidable time of the Corona virus, we are asked to do things that are not customary, and often uncomfortable. It is often said to me that "I just can't live like this." Clients tell me that they cannot stay so socially isolated. Yes you can. Clients tell me that they can't walk around disinfecting things. Yes you can. Clients tell me that they can't give up attending large sporting events. Yes you can. Clients tell me that they can't give up going to summer concerts. Yes you can. Clients tell me that they can't wash their hands thoroughly so many times each day. Yes you can. Clients tell me that they can't find hand sanitizer. Yes you can. Clients tell me that they can't remember to use respiratory hygiene like using tissues when coughing and then throwing the tissues away. Yes you can. Client tell me that they can't avoid contact with the sick. Yes you can.

During these past months we are beginning to figure out that we don't need as much as we thought we did. We are learning that doing without is not as inconvenient as we feared. Not being able to go to a concert is not that big of a deal. As my rabbi, Josh Whinston, has advised, "We do need the basic stuff for sustenance...we must keep learning and growing. Even in the face of uncertainty, learning is essential." But, if my grocery store is out of beef, this is a small thing. It may be a bit of an inconvenience. If there is no Kleenex on the shelves, we can make do. If Famous Amos Chocolate chip cookies are not available, we have to remember that a cookie is just a cookie. Without learning this, everything else is impossible.
