GET BUSY DOING NOTHING

The above is good advice. A while ago I was listening to rain and doing nothing else - not talking on my phone, not texting, not reading a magazine. Nothing. Nada. I was not practicing meditation or deep breathing. I was just sitting around and thinking but only if thoughts passively popped into my head. At times I really enjoy doing nothing. During most of my life I am extremely busy being available 24/7 without consistently taking time to recharge my batteries so that I don't suffer burn out. Brooklyn Storme, psychologist, has written that women in particular often have difficulty with the idea of doing nothing. I have been one of those women from time to time when I have over-focused on the benefits of being productive. It is important for me to change my mindset. I am learning to see nothingness as an investment in myself. It ultimately makes me more creative than ever. It is not always easy for me to do nothing and you may also find that it is difficult for you as well. Here are a 13 tips to make it easier:

1. Do nothing at the same time each day so that you begin to look forward to it.
2. Don't set a time certain to end your barren state.
3. Avoid spending your empty time reviewing a mental to do inventory.
4. You will be tempted to create something like a grocery list in your head. This is normal but you have to practice steering clear of this temptation.
5. You have to remind yourself that the more you do this, the easier it will get.
6. Enjoy the pleasure of letting your mind wander so that you will keep looking forward to the nothingness you need.
7. Avoid meditation or yoga. They are too purposeful and will rob you of your daydreams.
8. Stay off of the internet. Stay off of your cell phone. Unplug.
9. Remember that nothingness is not a time for problem solving.
10. See nothingness as a way to calm yourself and know that it is often the most productive part of your day.
11. Recognize that daydreaming is time well spent.
12. Let your mind wander wherever it want to go. You are no longer in charge.
13. You can experience nothingness while waiting for a plane, standing in line, while you are "on hold," knitting or doodling. Do something that busies your hands - not your mind. Remember, your mind is on vacation. Don't forget that 13 is your lucky number.
