JOY OF LIFE

I am borrowing most of this blog from the wisdom of Josh Whinston, a rabbi in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He wrote a letter about what makes people Jewish. As the ideas about which he wrote are universal and applicable to all of us who seek happiness, identity and goals to be good role models, I am adapting some of his words to human beings in general, humans of any identity and humans who have had families, grand families and children of their own. He asks "What makes us Jewish (joyfully satisfied humans) today. He asks us to identify a sacred day of the year when we gather with family, when we are willing to take a day off from work or school and devote the day to who we are in a spiritual sense. Most of the words and phrases here are the Rabbi's words. The adaptations are my idea for myself, the clients whom I serve and the good spirits of their loved ones and families.

By the way, do put quotes around almost everything in this letter which I received. Without it, I would not be contributing what I contribute from the passion of my work and the growth of my clients. Without a doubt, as all people living in America, it is challenging to align our lives with many religious calendars. It means missing important meetings, days of school and valuable work hours. It also means reaffirming what is the most critical in our lives, it means educating friends and colleagues that we are distinct and it means connection to our history. It connects us to our ancestors and the foundational material of our spiritual traditions.

Stop for the day and reconnect as you grapple with the swirling reality in which we live. Stop for the day and be present with yourself and your community. If you have children in your home or somewhere else, help them to stop for the day. If we don't teach ourselves and our children the importance of how we spend time, time will one day vanish.

Thank you, Rabbi Whinston, for enriching me and the hundreds of others touched by my life.
