Social Media

Styles for sharing feelings and ideas are changing. Newer styles are being criticized because people are connecting online to form social relationships and virtual communities. Many of my clients talk with me about all of the "friends" they have on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snap chat, U tube and Vireo. They tell me they are building bonds. These social media contacts are described by many, however, as distant, unreal and a substitute for actual friendliness and companionship. It is said that the above social media is for people who just want an audience. Often, I find that this is true. It is also true, however, that social technologies can help to connect people.
Many Facebook friends report increased self confidence for those who want to express their feelings. In these instances, it can affect people positively. There are people who have a history of being introverted and they find it hard to relieve a sense of isolation. Through social media they can begin to experience new communication pathways and social support.
So before we criticize this new social media, we should wait. Close relationships start with many kinds of skills which, given the need, most can learn how to say what they really mean
