Face Your Fears

I have had many people come into my office complaining about silliness  of fear when "There is really nothing about which to be scared."  There are times when that may have been true but I am finding that this is not one of those times.  On most days, if I turn on my television set for more than an hour, I will hear about the same things which my clients tell me leave them feeling scared.  Terrorism.
Nearly every day we hear about a mass murder in the streets, at a school, in traffic, at a workplace or in a shopping area.  We try to tell ourselves that this could not happen in the peaceful places where we live, visit or shop.  This is a huge mistake.  We can't change what we don't recognize.  Let us at least look at the things you can do to manage the frightened feelings which you are experiencing:
     1. Join neighborhood political/protective groups to review plans that may already be in place to help assure safety in areas that used to be considered "the most peaceful places in town."
     2. Take classes to help yourself recognize the many ways in which you can assure your own safety.
     3. Encourage your police department to have presentations about how to behave when you are in a large group that is suddenly attacked by vicious assailant.
     4. Share your concerns with others so that you don't feel isolated with your worries.  It may be helpful for you to start a neighborhood group to review concerns and behavioral options.
     5. Remain strong.  Eat well.  Sleep well.  Exercise,
     6. Limit television coverage of terrorist events.  In this way, you can maintain awareness while limiting worry and dread,
     7. Go on about your days accomplishing your normal activities.  Act normal to feel normal.
     8. Learn how to use relaxation techniques and meditation.
