CRISIS MANAGEMENT

Sometimes we receive an unexpected diagnosis of a serious disease, or news about the death of a loved one or an unanticipated occupational change or a family relationship problem for which we did not feel prepared. I have had to deal with many of these issues and I want to share what I have learned about how to manage these things that can sometimes feel unmanageable.

If you have difficulty with unforeseen situations, you could benefit from professional help. If you believe you can handle it all on your own, you need help even faster. With the right kind of assistance, you will learn that there is no problem that is totally out of your control.

My assistance is here for you - not only because of extensive professional training but because I have been fortunate enough to help others solve many personal, spiritual and business dilemmas during the past 35 years.

As I get to know you, I can help you uncover the causes of your difficulties and we can explore alternative solutions so that you can become successful in reaching the goals you will set for yourself.

Many of us find it hard to examine the roots of our problems. In many cases, the causes are our own behaviors or ideas. It can feel hard to admit this. On the other hand if we don't take responsibility for our problems, we are unable to eliminate them. I can't fix my neighbor's headache but I can take responsibility for keeping Advil in my own medicine cabinet. I can't stop my neighbor from putting herself in stressful situations, but, I certainly can identify how I increase the stress in my own living room.

We must think enough of ourselves to accept responsibility for our situations and we must avoid putting blame on others for our positions. If we blame others for the problems we have created, we are merely being arrogant while trying to avoid admitting that we have made a mistake.

Before you blame someone else for your own errors, wait and think about whether you have a genuine goal to solve a problem or merely a felt need to be "right." If you need to be right rather than accurate, self esteem is likely the best issue for you to explore.

Be aware that you can't fix your self esteem by pretending that you have no responsibility for your own situation or by refusing to look at the causes for the problems you have. Instead, work on a plan to reverse the matter in question.
