THE HEALING POWER OF HUMOR

If you are sad or tense or worried, you will absolutely improve your mood by laughing. If you are a room with ten other people and one starts to laugh, then the next and then again the next, you will soon be aware of the contagious nature of laughter. Even if your started off in a bad mood, you, too, will get bitten by the laughter bug and it will not be long before you are laughing your head off.

While you are giggling, your body will release endorphins - often referred to as nature's narcotics. These body chemicals can make you feel "high," can reduce stress, decrease tension and can even improve your memory.

If you are trying to cope with something unpleasant, you can always find that there is something funny about it. I often suggest to my clients that they imagine their situation being acted out by others on a theater stage and suggest to them that they can probably see the humor in the horror. I am rarely surprised at the number of people who leave my office laughing. Several years ago I facilitated group therapy for those who were suffering with cancer. My rule was that each participant had to come in prepared with a joke. Everyone noted an improvement in mood.

And if today is not one of your best days, have you heard the one about:

Five surgeons from big cities discussing who makes the best patients to operate on. The first surgeon from New York says, "I like accountants. When you open them up, everything is numbered."

The second surgeon from Chicago responds, "Yeah, but you should try electricians. Everything inside them is color coded."

The third surgeon from Dallas says says, "I really think librarians are best. Everything inside them is in alphabetical order."

The forth surgeon from Los Angeles chimes in "You know, I like construction workers...those guys always understand when you have a few parts left over."

But the fifth surgeon from Washing DC shut them all up when he observed, "You're all wrong. Politicians are the easiest to operate on. Sometimes, there are no guts, no brains and no spine...plus the head and the fanny are interchangeable."

Come on....you smiled at least a little.

"Against the assault of laughter, nothing can stand."
