Health And Aging Emotional Issues

Therapy for individuals and couples in Athens, Decatur, Madison, and Huntsville, AL

As people grow older, they have a recognition that life ends. During the period of time from that acknowledgment until the end of life, some people experience depression, anger and frustration. So many things that were previously taken for granted are now difficult barriers to a comfortable day. As aging progresses, you may experience poor vision, difficulty with mobility and less dexterity. How frustrating that even simple tasks now feel like complicated obstacles. You may have difficulty getting dressed, reading a magazine or newspaper or finding your way up and down the aisles of a supermarket. Things that used to be easy now require concentration skills that are not always reliable for you. Some people feel worried and fearful as they recognize that there may be little they can do about these losses.

The stress related to aging can affect every organ of your body complicating problems with blood pressure, ulcers, acid reflux, anxiety, panic attacks, bowel problems, back aches, tension headaches and sleep problems.

My work with those who are growing older involves efforts at "positive aging" as I encourage clients to achieve their full potential. It is important to recognize that, as you age, not all of your contacts have to be older people. I will encourage you to appreciate maintaining contact with children, young adults and folks who are even older than you are. Successful aging also involves maintaining realistic independence as you eat well, sleep well and maintain contact with friends. Staying active will also assist you with your aging process. Additionally, read, play games, do crossword puzzles and discuss current events with others. Expose yourself to things that make you laugh. A good sense of humor can be a remarkable medicine. Know that life can be a joy at any age.

I am old enough to remember Groucho Marx say that "Getting older is no problem. You just have to live long enough."
